These images are taken from a series about the Birmingham Canal Navigations (BCN) and some of its connecting canals. Together, these waterways form the largest network of navigable canals in the world, and at one time they fuelled the growth of Birmingham, Great Britain, and its Empire.

The canals are now mainly used for pleasure and tourism, although this project focussed on them during the winter (January-April 2013) when there are fewer visitors and the industrial purpose of the canals becomes clearer.
